7 Gates of Hell - 2005
1. I've received yesterday your latest production - "Nocturnal March"- and I must tell that...I am fucking more than satisfied! New album is great Black Metal stuff, undoubtly! Maybe you didn't "discover America" but the material have mystic, horned soul and what is important your music sounds fresh and uncompromising... Fuck, I should not be so sweet in the beginning of the interview but I am really impressed, so you must forgive me that ha, ha!
DNS:
Starting out sweet or with pure malevolence is unimportant as long as this is your honest opinion your "ass kissing" is excused. It was never our intention to create a new style of music. Slaughtercult rides under the banner of pure fucking black metal. We defend the stronghold of traditional old school black metal strictly based on occult, unholy themes. Others may "discover new territories" gaining all the glory and fortune, but dedicated hordes like D.N. Slaughtercult will pillage and sack their newly gained ground with sheer blasphemous conviction. Thus, returning the old values!
2. What is interesting the sound of the album is very good but still your music is dark and filthy, if you know what I mean. And of course it's still raw, brutal and fast but...quite atmospheric too! So you are the 100% proof that progress IS possible in so hermetic style as Black Metal...
DNS:
Although we regard our musical manifestations as so called old school this does not limit us to "cheap" rehearsal room recordings. Slaughtercult is an infernal, living proof that even an underground "horde" can achieve professional quality production and "musically" wise! There are so many "true" black metal "maniacs" who say, only tapes and vinyl is "true". Furthermore their narrow minded believes state that one can not capture the spirit of black metal in any professional studio. Fuck all that!! Like we said numerous times before... within the bowels of "Hell" it is not the type of sound carrier or the way of recording which matters. After all, a lousy band will always "sound" pathetic. Musical excrements can not hide behind the sound carrier!! The most important value is the spirit/atmosphere a band is able to capture...that can happen anywhere, anytime! Our mind is not bound to any foul, rotting rehearsal room. Black Metal has found it is way into our lives, not the other way around.
3. One of the most interesting tracks for me on new album is the one with ... polish lyrics! How it can be? Some relatives in Poland? What do you think about our country and our scene?
DNS:
On every darkened chapter we have used several languages, for instance German, English and Latin. Not to forget the unearthly tongue of neologisms. As Onielar is doing 100% of the vocal lacerations she has no problem using her native tongue, which is, as you have guessed, Polish!
ONIELAR:
Niedawno temu powstala wlasnie z tego powodu 12"LP na której znajduje sie jeden najdluszszy kawalek Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult nazywajac sie "underneath Stars OF The East"
Skomponowalam text i muzyke z dedykatia dla polskiej ziemi. Ten kawalek brzmi bardzo old school, pelny melancholi w srednim temie.
We do not really follow any scene closely, ofcorpse every country has worthy, commanding legions - spontaneously Besatt and Arkona come to our mind! Also bands like Saltus, Goetia, and Wojnar the proud Slavonic warrior. Also mentioned should be a great ambient "music" creator Robert K. - whose two songs are part of our third chapter - with his projects like R'lyeh and VRIL. Oh and not to forget the legendary KAT! Unfortunately every "scene" has also the ordinary cannonfodder!!!
4. Do you know the good old BM band from Poland called Sacrilegium? Few parts of "Wicher Za Górami" sounds like their music…of course I'm talking about inspirations, not the copying! Or is it just coincidence and only mine personal thought?
DNS:
Sorry, this name does not ring a funeral bell!? Comparisons can easily be made for any track of any release, if you are really desperately looking for one. If Sacrilegium shares the same inspiration it might be worth looking out for one of their releases. Haha, after all if it reminds you of "Wicher Za Górami" it must be fucking ingenious.
5. You have your own expectations or goals about the new album?
DNS:
It is not wise to have any expectations at all prior to the release. There is no fame and fortune to be found within the concentric circles of this type of extreme music. We are merely trying to achieve the acknowledgement an album like "Nocturnal March" deserves. Or in general speaking, we are merely trying to reach the few individual "listeners" who cherish and breathe the same kind of "spirit" which we have done with Slaughtercult for the past 7 infernal years.
However, above all: most important is our consciousness concerning this album. For it was spawned out of our purest and utmost honest "spirit".
6. And how the first reviews about it?
DNS:
As far as we know there has been just one official review so far. Keep in mind the album has barely been released. Nevertheless unofficial reviews as well as private send opinions of "album obtainers" all state the same... "Nocturnal March" is absofuckinglutely a worthy follow up of the sophomore release entitled "Follow the Calls for Battle". As more and more official reviews reach us they will be posted in the Slaughtercult archives www.slaughtercult.de !
7. Is there any difference in recording the first and the third album? Greater expectations? Nerves?
DNS:
The environment changed over the years. "The Pest Called Humanity" was recorded in some basement of some school building. The lavatories were not working properly. Everything was drenched in a foul smell of excrements. Furthermore the analog multitrack mixer was used for porn movies in the past. So everything settled to evoke the first 5 hateful hymns. Needless to say, that we did not return to this shithole ever again. The second and third album were both recorded in the studio of long time companion (and producer) Armin Rave. Although the surroundings were more comfortable the stress factor never really reduced!
8. O.K. Now something completely different ...You have at last some stable line-up, am I right? Can you make some introduction of DNS members?
DNS:
That is correct. Since 2002 there has been a more than just stable line-up! Onielar (Vox, Git) as well as Velnias (Git) have remained of the original line-up in 1997. Ariovist (drums) was replaced by fellow combatant Horrn in 2001, who successfully conquered the vacant drum throne. Grigorr, former session bass player, resigned in order to make space for fulltime bassist Emporonorr. This legion has grown together, entwined by unholy forces, now standing shoulder by shoulder, "sword by sword".
9. TO VELNIAS: How do you feel to be one of the little group of metal bands which have in their lines a female artist...? It is some sort of difficulty (when for example some brainless "fans" shows their disaprovement on gigs?) Or something constructive?
Or is it not so big difference after all..?
VELNIAS:
For a moment - ponder about the following question: "Does it really matter which hand, may that be male or female, strikes down the judging blade upon ethereal plains, thus delivering the final life shattering death blow ?" ... we are way beyond mere gender reduction ! Slaughtercult respects individuals not "human genders". The occult has many faces and shapes. There is more to it than explicitly two different types. Indeed there has been some very, very "pseudo evil" pathetic human scum, which apparently can not cope with a "female artist". Maybe simply because they see their oh so fucking masculine world being reduced to a useless pile of rubbish. Maybe they see themselves threatened by the dignity of Onielar's harsh vocals, or the overall appearance of a dedicated "warrior". Nevertheless, within our saldorian ranks one stands for all. Privileges for all - or none. There have been "brainless fans" prior to some shows....these "fans" were converted during the blood stained live battle!
AND TO ONIELAR: It can be noticed from the way you sing that you have greater balls than 90% of metal vocalists in the fucking world, haha! So what happened that you started to express yourself in that way? You have your favorite vocalists?
Do you know the polish band from the beginning of 90`s XANTOTOL?
ONIELAR:
My chosen path in life is certainly not a result of some fortuitous event in the past. I'd rather describe it as continuous development of a "spiritual" character. Mere filthy human beings are something I could never identify myself with. It has always been the more opposite "things" - themes which are profound and extreme - which have fascinated me. The vocals are the absolute expression of the implied spiritual depth which D.N.S. represents. Everybody apparently ponders about the difference between genders within Slaughtercult … do you see a difference on any "band" pictures? With our deriding worn out masks, may that be on- or offstage, Slaughtercult stands united side by side. A unit, which complements itself upon a rather "extreme path" through each horde member. Favourite vocalists, yes indeed, there are several outstanding vocalists with the metal scene. I'd say King Diamond, Abbath of Immortal, Attila formerly of Mayhem and Shamaatae of Arckanum. Xantolol … I've never heard of this horde.
10. I noticed that you are satisfied with such media as internet- you have your own web site, many contacts with web zines and etc. It's unusual thing for BM band cause almost everyone dislike net as a commercial thing which spawned bunch of idiots. What do you think about such statements?
DNS:
Name a place which is totally free of ordinary bleating human sheep! This "place" exists merely amongst the desolate spectral landscapes in the complexity of spiritual self ascendance. One encounters idiots in every day life!!! Fact is the internet is as full of crap as printed magazines, compilation CDs and many concert halls are. Filthy human beings are found everywhere. The internet allows us to stay in contact with world wide supporters. It saves time, money which otherwise would be spend on enormous postage rates and phone bills. Such superfluous comments are a great part why we do not longer follow any "scene" or current movement. Slaughtercult does what seems right to us - one can either be with or against us! We do not really care about others opinion - if you do not like what we do piss off and annoy someone else. "[Human being] Insignificant to me you are"...
11. I know from few sources that DNS have some sort of a cult status in the scene already, and have much respect from fans but as I noticed the "metal journalist" (at least in Poland) dont really care about you- or maybe I'm wrong and you have much support from magazines? And mainly- do you wish such support?
DNS:
We have reached cult status already? We get respect from "fans"?! We are certainly aware of a few very dedicated maniacs world wide who support the works of D.N.S. in any possible way, but frankly speaking Slaughtercult is an underground horde. There is no possible way this will ever change. This type of extreme music does not meet the majorities expectations - a violently, restless raging blood thirsty beast will never be mankind's friend. They fear what they do not understand. In the past we have never really cared much about magazines. The "journalists" came to us or not at all. As mentioned before we have "loyal" supporters who appreciate hordes like D.N.S., supporters who are able to apprehend the existence of such bands. We can not blame anyone for not knowing an underground band. It is all a question of distribution. Especially the black metal "market" has been flooded by sheer endless unnecessary releases. At some point it is impossible to filter out interesting bands. Through this rotting stench, through this bottomless bloody swamp one must wade in order to discover some excellent albums.
12. What do you think about politics statement of BM bands in your country..? Can you tell me what your local bands you find as most interesting?
DNS:
It is pathetic to let the pure essence of black metal be misused for political propaganda. In our humble opinion black metal should reject every superfluous "manmade creation". Guess what, politics belong to this useless category. Black metal is based on occult soil. Politics are manmade in order to please and control the masses. Black Metal is for proud individuals. Those infiltrating the traditional ranks in order to inject their sickening political propaganda will hopefully soon jump on the next best "trend". Thus they will be perished and forgotten. As we are living close to the Dutch border you could also count Fluisterwoud as well as Sauron as "local" hordes. Both support worthy allies!!
13. I was reading somewhere that you describe yourself as an occultist. What it means for you? Inspiration? Way of life? Don't you think that is already some sort of trend to be occultist and to practice magic? For example in almost every gig in Poland I've met at least two teenage bimbos ,with tits whipping out from their dark gothic clothes, saying
that they are witches and occultist... pathetic for me.
DNS:
… and also pathetic to us. One with a real fascination for the "occult " will easily be able to distinguish between trendy wanna be's and those who have really tried to enrich and enhance the self crowned I, by questioning predefined definitions, by breaking manmade chains - freeing the spirit in order to roam free beyond the boundaries of mere human comprehension. Occultism is an individual way of finding the essence of existence itself. Occultism is the individual path towards a state of "godly light" - a dusty path, several lifespans long, winding and unforgiving, desolate and narrow, painful and miserable. Yet at the same time walking the "heavens" and "hells" has the power to strengthen spiritual pencilled vigour. Occultism is the awareness of time constantly passing us by. Occultism is the grand universal enlightenment, the self ascendance towards this godly state of light. There is no need for a serious occultist to go out letting everyone know "hey I am a witch"… first of all that sounds fucking stupid! Secondly, these people ARE fucking stupid! Above all, the wandering spirit knows, the higher it ascends the more isolated your existence will be. The spheres of occultism are individual paths to walk,… a path which has intersections at first but more and more turns into a solitary walk towards the "gallows" - for at the end … death awaits!!!
14. In one of interviews at your web-site I was reading that one of your best gigs was show in 2002 in Arnhem (NL). What was so special about people and atmosphere in this gig that you have remembered this one as the best? Please be most detailed as you can.
DNS:
December 24th, 2002 one of our most blasphemous and intense shows so far! You want bloody details, well … the stage as always was decorated with inverted crosses and skulls. On this special occasion, so to speak to honor the spirit of shitmas, we placed a statue of Maria holding infant Jesus in her arms upon a marble pedestal. Fog, dimly shaded lights and a horrific intro created the appropriate atmosphere to celebrate this precious religious night. As the intro reached the climax this statue was blown in bits by a huge double bladed axe crushing down - once, twice, three times. Christianity was literally crushed, shattered into pieces… the crowd immediately grabbed the left overs pulverizing the remains as we began the show with the first track. The performance itself had a good onstage sound, which made us feel very comfortable. The crowd returned the energy we delivered. December 24th, 2002 was a black metal celebration which stayed in the mind of many people. Although every bloodstained live battle is something special that gig was outstanding. While most "kiddies" stayed at home having shitmas dinner with their parents only dedicated maniacs showed up!
15. Do you think that Black Metal can be (or is) real opposition to the pop-culture? In what way, if yes?
DNS:
Music in general can not be judged as being the total opposite of this and that genre. Pop music is what the ordinary human can listen to - for he understands simple beats and so called "easy listenings". The ordinary filthy human being is able to understand lyrics based on "Love" and "charity". Black Metal in its pure and raw underground form gives a damn about peace, love and charity. Black Metal does not really know moral values - at least not those preached by politically correct minds. Take extreme music for what it is … a minority, which does not need bleating sheep trotting behind them. That goes as far as the intention of this specific style is concerned. Viewed on a more global aspect, music itself is a powerful language which is able to touch one's "soul". Just like the fiery "pits of hell" it has the power to create and to destroy. Thus, continuing this thought, music itself either unfolds its entire beauty or it remains unheard. This "beauty" on the other hand, is able to draw the listener down into abysmal chasms of utmost deep depression, just like it is able to be a guiding light in the misty wind swept moorlands. "Pop culture" is a language which we do not speak or understand. It is the language of the ordinary human rank and file.
16. I know that you describe D.N.S as an underground band so.., What means for you to be an underground band after all?
DNS:
Primarily that we are true and loyal to ourselves. Furthermore, that we do not follow any trend. We simply do what many bands did in the early- mid 90ies. We arise from their shadow. We ascend from their graves. We are the harvest of their malevolent seed. We do not aim at fame and fortune. We do not adopt to modern trends and movements. Within our own world lies the true "richness", that is what matters the most. Underground means pure conviction and dedication.
17. Black Metal was always hardly connected with satanic ideologies but from few answers i was reading your philosophy is quite..pagan-dont you think so? And what do you think about paganism / native faith? In what way you identify with it and in what way you support satanism..?
DNS:
It is all a question of the according definition. Call us Satanists, call us Paganists, call us what you want … Slaughtercult stands for own "satanic", "nihilistic" and "misantrophic ideologies". Many ideologies have interesting aspects which partially meet ones own interpretation. The most important factor is to understand that every single definition, every word, every term is based on manmade interpretation. You can take it for granted and live with it, or you can start to rethink and ponder about such predefined terms. Death has many faces - those dwelling in shadows, in the corner of your room, those tormenting you in "dreams, prophecies and horrors" come in all sorts of shapes and figures. Some faceless, some shapeless, some … as a mere inner unwelcome, unpleasant, disturbing feeling. We do not completely identify with any of the aforementioned human definitions. There is truth between the lines. If you would refer to the latest trend "I am just grand master Satan's slave without him my life is useless" then we are certainly no Satanists - as we do not kneel down before any manmade deity. If you would refer to Paganism as national socialistic views, than we are definitely not Paganists. We are simply proud individuals who have found wisdom within themselves. Not more, not less, …
18. Could you tell me something about your lyrics in the end?
DNS:
Certainly! Slaughtercult's scrolls of lyrical enlightenment are obviously strictly based upon the rather dark side of "life". Ranging from vivid descriptions of life denying, nihilistic themes all the way to higher levels of philosophy. Ranging from extinguishing the religious falsity at the very rotten core itself - all the way to excursions into the deeper, misantrophic realms and spheres of existence. Slaughtercult takes you to the borders of your world. Slaughtercult forces you to stare down into the abyss - "look into the [darkened] mirror - it is the devil I see". By using neologisms the reader is forced to grasp the meaning behind each track in order to fully understand the purpose for each pure fucking black metal hymn. Or put into more simple words to remember… our lyrics follow the traditional way: "grim, dark and evil"!!!
19. Plans for future?
DNS:
What the future holds in store for us is uncertain. Fact is within our saldorian stronghold we are our own blacksmith forging our own destiny… the slaughter will continue …
