"Saldorian Spell"

reflectionsofdarkness.com

DARKENED NOCTURN SLAUGHTERCULT is a German Black Metal band, who was formed back in 1997 with the ambition of producing old school black metal. They subdivide their history into different chapters, each representing the process of creating a record, also including several line-up changes. Right now, they find themselves in the fifth chapter, having released ‘Saldorian Spell’.

Including a small intro, ‘Saldorian Spell’ opens up the album with an energetic mixture of rather slow parts and expeditious elements, a beginning that makes clear that DARKENED NOCTURN SLAUGHTERCULT are not about to make any compromises but to serve their listeners thoroughgoing black metal. The vocals are also in a way staggering, since I assume that most people would not suggest a female producing such tones. ‘Beneath The Moon Scars Above’ possesses a remarkable refrain, including screaming and bestiality. From a musical point of view it is in evidence that the band has been working together for a while since everything seems very balanced and mature, without appearing predictably.

‘Kataklysmic Bretherens’ continues to crack the whip whilst ‘Glance at the Horizon’ rushes along in the accustomed and favoured speed. ‘The Descent To The Last Circle’ starts in a way more technically orientated, yet without ignoring the task of serving trueness, grimness and evilness. All in all, the eight tracks serve promising black metal, and the aim of staying true to modern roots is definitely accomplished. Fans of the genre are highly recommended to check this band (if not known yet) out. As I received a promo CD including the album but not in its final mix, I am not able to judge the final sound, although I have to say that the at times rough mix totally fits the music.
